A United Way community impact initiative, the International Center of the Heartland (ICH) is a centralized one-stop shop for direct and referral services for refugees and immigrants. The ICH strengthens the community’s well-being by connecting newcomers with housing, healthcare, employment, and legal advice. Community partners include LFS, Legal Aid, One World Community Health, and Catholic Charities. ICH staff members give support, guidance and empowerment to those in need of assistance, encourage self-sufficiency, and educate the community about the challenges newcomers face and the assets they bring with them.
The ICH also generates new opportunities for more in-depth interactions with newcomers through service-learning projects, practicum placements and sponsorships, seeking to create a welcoming, interconnected community.
