Open Adoption Benefits

Benefits for Children
The children of open adoption grow up with the assurance and comfort of knowing their birth parents love them very much. They know and understand how they joined their adoptive family. The children of open adoption do not fantasize about who their birth parents are or what they are like - they know!

In open adoption, because the child knows about his/her roots and heritage, the child's feelings of loss and abandonment are minimized and they are not confused by having parents and birth parents. This is only natural to them as they grow up with full access to information about the people who love them. A child's capacity to love is not limited.

Benefits for birth parents
Open adoption provides many assurances to birth parents who decide to release their child for adoption. Birth parents select the parents who will raise their child. Their grief and feelings of loss are lessened by their ability to communicate with the adoptive family on an ongoing basis. Birth parents experience a peace of mind in knowing how their child is developing throughout life.

Benefits for adoptive families
Adoptive parents experience a stronger sense of entitlement in their parental role as a result of being chosen by the birth parents to raise the child. Adoptive parents no longer fear the unknown because they know the identity and whereabouts of the birth parents. They have direct access to information in answering a child's questions and in exploring medical concerns.
