Questions to Ask Adoption Agencies and Attorneys

  • How many placements did the agency or attorney facilitate in each of the last five years?

  • How many of these were open, semi-open, and closed adoptions?

  • How many families are currently waiting for placement with this agency or attorney?

  • How many new families will be receiving a homestudy this year?

  • What is the fee for the program? How is this paid? Are fees a guarantee of placement? If no fees are charged, what contribution level is expected and for what period of time?

  • How are medical bills paid? If paid directly by the family, is assistance available in the case of a C-section delivery?

  • Do the birthparents that work with the agency or attorney receive counseling?

  • How long has the agency or attorney been doing adoption? Will they be available in years to come if assistance in any way is needed?

  • What kind of educational opportunity does the agency or attorney offer before and after placement?
