The Maternal Health Care program in Lexington, NE works with local clinics to provide prenatal care for low-income pregnant women.

The program coordinator receives referrals from schools, often for initial verification of pregnancy. The girls then begin prenatal care on a timely basis, and they receive support and encouragement about sharing their situation with their parents. In some cases they are also referred to an Unplanned Pregnancy Counselor.

Approximately 90% of our clients are Hispanic, and a majority of our clients are teenagers. We encourage girls to stay in school, establish a stable relationship with their family, and become well-informed about their situation so as to have a healthy outcome.

Many clients lack the financial means and insurance to care for their unborn child. To financially assist low-income families, we sometimes write temporary Medicaid eligibility for unborn children. Medicaid then pays for the expenses of prenatal care and delivery.

On the first visit the client's pregnancy is verified and then assisted to start prenatal care. On the second visit, they receive their Medicaid number, doctor's appointment if wanted, and prenatal information and education. At this time they are given a layette gift and a baby quilt and encouraged to come back if any other assistance is needed.

Through a collaboration with a local high school, pregnant teenagers can attend a for-credit class on pregnancy and parenting within the high school. The majority of participants in the school-based program graduate high school instead of dropping out.

The program coordinator is on site Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., to take admissions, provide education and referrals, and schedule appointments. Please visit or contact our Lexington office for further information.
