Since its inception, the United States has welcomed immigrants, refugees, and those fleeing persecution from all over the world. Coming to a safe, peaceful refuge is a relief, but trying to acculturate and learn a new language, new customs, and a new educational system can be very frightening.
Many newcomers are drawn to Nebraska for its jobs, small town hospitality, quality education and family values. Recently, groups of concerned citizens in Norfolk, Lexington and Omaha recognized the need for “one-stop” centers to address the complex needs of these New Americans. These centers, collectively known as New American Centers, are culturally-sensitive and knowledgeable entities that empower immigrants with the skills, guidance and support to become acculturated and self-sufficient.
New American Center (Norfolk, NE)
Opened in July 2005, the New American Center (NAC) serves not only the immigrant population, but also the established government entities (schools, city and county government, housing agencies, energy agencies) and private sector entities (landlords, colleges, work sites, local “help” agencies) that serve these diverse cultures. Thanks to the generous support of the Norfolk area, the NAC has been successful in moving toward its mission and has begun to offer services to those within a 60 mile radius of Norfolk.
The Welcome Center (Lexington, NE)
Opened in March 2006, The Welcome Center is a resource center where multiple community groups and faith-based ministries unite to provide spiritual, social, and economic support while building bridges across cultures to improve the quality of life for all people.
International Center of the Heartland (Omaha, NE)
Opened in February 2007, the International Center of the Heartland (ICH) is a centralized location offering direct on-site services as well as referral to other services for refugees and immigrants coming to the greater Omaha metropolitan area. The goal is to guide and empower our newest neighbors as they seek to become strong and participating members of our community. ICH serves as a place where individuals can come together, bond, and share in their traditions. It also provides educational opportunities to area service providers and community businesses on issues relating to immigrants, workforce development, and cultural diversity.
Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska is the lead agency in these community collaborative efforts.
