A disaster is an event of either natural or human origin that results in great harm, suffering, destruction and
damage beyond a community´s ability to respond, including:
- Floods
- Tornadoes
- Windstorms
- Fires
- Drought
- Explosions
- Collapse of structures
- Release of hazardous materials
- Acts of terror
Nebraska Lutheran Disaster Response (NLDR) is a coordinated Lutheran effort to organize
assistance to those in need following natural and man-made disasters. (Read about one of the ways NLDR helped families ravaged by tornadoes)
NLDR assists with damage assessment, donation coordination, volunteer organization, financial assistance and counseling services. It is coordinated by
Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska and is a cooperative effort of the Nebraska
District LCMS, Nebraska Synod ELCA,
Orphan Grain Train, and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
The NLDR Team
The NLDR Team - representing the ELCA, the LCMS and other affiliated Lutheran organizations - consists of seven
regional response members from across Nebraska and is coordinated by Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska.
The NLDR Team partners with other Lutheran agencies involved in Lutheran Disaster relief and serves as a liaison
between the local community and the greater Lutheran Church body. It also serves to:
- Cultivate awareness in Nebraska's Lutheran congregations of their opportunity to minister to their communities in times of disaster
- Encourage Lutheran congregations to develop disaster preparedness partnerships with other private and public organizations
- Guide Lutheran congregations in affected communities in their initial response
- Help Lutheran congregations assess the needs for their continuing response
- Connect Lutheran congregations with statewide and national Lutheran response efforts and resources
- Support and sustain the congregational and pastoral care givers directly involved in a disaster
