On September 6th and 7th, 2018, migrants and refugees who now live in Nebraska will learn how they can make a positive impact on their new home communities here in the United States.

The inaugural Migrant and Refugee Leadership Academy will provide the newcomers with opportunities to come together, share experiences and develop the skills necessary to advocate on issues of importance to other migrants and refugees in our state.

The academy’s first day on September 6th takes place in Omaha, at the Marriott Courtyard Downtown/Old Market at 101 S. 10th Street, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The training is designed to hone leadership skills, create opportunities for networking and provide incentives for participants to use this experience in their local communities and advocate for issues of concern. The goal is to lift up the voices of all refugees in order to create more welcoming communities in the state of Nebraska.

On September 7, the group will travel to the Nebraska State Capitol in Lincoln, where Civic Nebraska will provide members an opportunity to learn more about Nebraska’s unique form of state government and American democracy.

The Migrant and Refugee Academy is a partnership of Lutheran Immigration Refugee Service and Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska.
