“What They Need versus What They Know: Helping adults respond when a loved one causes sexual harm”.
Caregivers need the most support immediately after disclosure of child sexual assault and are judged harshly by the child protection system if they are not immediately protective and supportive of the abused child. Unfortunately, they are often ignored and forgotten or blamed for the problem.
Caregivers’ acceptance of sexual abuse and reacting in a protective manner is directly related to the sexually abused youth’s progress in treatment and their recovery.
Parenting youth and teens is hard work, and caregivers experience the toughest crisis of their lives when they learn that their child has been a victim of sexually abusive behavior.
Being a partner or family member of an adult accused of sexually abusing a child is almost unbearable. Unhelpful reactions include denial, justification, rage, shame and blaming the abused child.
Many caregivers have their own history of sexual trauma, which magnifies their reaction in both positive and negative ways.
This training is sponsored by LFS RSafe® Program and presented by Sheryl Overby, MS, LIMHP, and Whitney Anderson, LIMHP
Deadline for Registration is September 8, 2019
