RSafe® 4th Annual Sexual Abuse Conference
November 12 & 13, 2020
9:00 am to 4:00 pm
“What They Need versus What They Know: Helping Caregivers Respond When a Loved One Causes Sexual Harm”
Parenting youth and teens is hard work and caregivers experience the toughest crisis of their lives when they learn that their child has been sexually assaulted or has been the initiator of sexually harmful behavior. Many caregivers have their own history of sexual trauma, which magnifies their reaction in both positive and negative ways.
Immediately after disclosure of child sexual assault, caregivers of the abused child need the most support but are dismissed to focus on the child. If they are in shock, disbelief, or respond from a place of their own trauma, they are often judged harshly by human service providers and systems and may be blamed for contributing to the sexual harm.
Helpful responses by adults, especially mothers, is the number one thing that will help a child heal from experiencing sexual harm from an adult or older youth. However, the dynamics involved in youth-directed sexual harm and sexual assault caused by adults is COMPLETELY different. We will spend one day understanding how to help caregivers of youth who have caused sexual harm and one day addressing the needs of caregivers of children who have been sexually abused by an adult.
The best intervention in helping children who have experienced sexual abuse is assessing and helping their caregiver FIRST! Hope you can join us.
This training is sponsored by LFS RSafe® Program and presented by Sheryl Overby, MS, LIMHP, and Whitney Anderson, LIMHP
The deadline for registration is November 6, 2020
